HDindieNews - Mud Slides Destroy Homes and Vineyards, Oliver, BC June 2010 In June 2010, several vineyards in the southern Okanagan near Oliver were devastated by a dam failure that released 20000 cubic meters of water down Testalinden Creek, triggering a mudslide with a 180 metre wide swath of debris that extended over kilometres of vineyards and shut down the major roadway through the area
More than 16 hectares of vineyards were damaged by over 240000 cubic metres of mud and rock Testalinda is an historic area, school, creek, and a dam south of the Okanagan town of Oliver, British Columbia
(On some provincial maps the name Testalinda is replaced with the misnomer Testalinden)
The dam at Testalinden Lake burst June 13, 2010 at approximately 2:15 creating a debris torrent landslide that descended about a mile to the valley below destroying at least 5 homes and farms
The dam was built in the 1930s and after a heavy rainfall the dam couldn't hold up the water and gave way
The landslide blocked British Columbia Highway 97 and the creek was removed from its original bedding but has since been restored to its natural location
BC Highway 97 was cleared with the challenge of removing a home that slid onto the highway. |
